Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie says the potential for Gryan Miers to move to West Coast sits in “the hypothetical bucket”.

Reports say the 27-year-old forward is happy to remain at GMHBA Stadium.

However, he underwent a medical with the Eagles last week before heading overseas.

“He’s of interest (to other clubs) every year, which is a credit to him,” Mackie told Trade Radio.

“He’s obviously one of those unique players in the game with (his) forward half connection, and when he’s at his best, he’s very talented.

“I think players do their work these days.”

“He’s a much-loved player from our end. He loves the club.

“We’re pretty pragmatic and open generally about how we think about most things, and if Gryan was to sit there and say the best thing for his footy was maybe moving on, we’d be up for a chat with him about that, but that hasn’t happened.”

Mackie says West Coast have expressed their interest in Miers, who has played 172 matches since being drafted by the Cats in 2017, in recent days.

“There hasn’t been much discussion from our end, just given that recently we sat down with Gryan and had a good chat about everything, and he was feeling really good about us, and we’re feeling good about him,” Mackie said.

Geelong remains interested in St Kilda ruck Rowan Marshall, who the Cats were unable to get a deal done for last year.

Mackie says there’s work to do to get the 31-year-old to the club, with the Saints reportedly keen on Geelong’s first pick in this year’s National Draft.

“We’ve sent something through; they’ve sent something back,” he said.

There’s a bit of a gap there, but it’s day one (of the) trade period. We’ll see where it gets to.”

Essendon’s Jordan Ridley is keen to join Geelong, with the Cats believed to have offered up a future first-round selection.

“Jack Bowes would like to get to Essendon… and that’s something that we’ll try and facilitate,” Mackie said.

“It’s a great opportunity for Jack, so maybe it can all be tied up in there.

“We’ll catch up with the Bombers later on today and see if we can progress those discussions.”

Mackie confirmed Geelong hadn’t “done any work” on the prospect of dashing Sydney defender Nick Blakey.

“I understand the whole Sydney situation about why there’s discussion around these players,” he said.

“But from our end, Nick’s got a long-term contract at the Swans, and that’s where it sits.”

Geelong has already added former GWS Giants captain Toby Greene as an unrestricted free agent.

The trade period concludes next Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
