Gryan Miers has successfully negotiated a VFL hitout, but the Geelong forward says surgery on a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament remains a possibility.
The 27-year-old hadn’t played since the Cats’ AFL Gather Round win over West Coast before today.
He gathered 21 disposals in three quarters as Geelong maintained top spot on the VFL ladder with a 61-point win over Collingwood at Victoria Park, 17.14 (116) to 8.7 (55).
“It’s a relieving feeling. It’s been a real tough and stressful month weighing up the decisions,” Miers told ABC TV>
“And of all days, out in the slippery paddock turf, it was a real test for the knees.
“Relieving, good, it went well, and it feels great… a successful day.”
Miers revealed a feeling of instability in the knee during the opening month of the AFL season, which led to further investigation by Geelong’s medical staff.
“So, I was working through it, and the physios said, ‘We’ll get a scan’, and the scan showed some poor results for me.
“But the feeling was, ‘I can play. Why should we go for 12 months (on the sidelines)?’
“It’s still on the cards, if I’m being honest. We’ll see how the next few weeks go, but today was a huge step in the right direction.
“I’m not out of the woods, but I’m feeling good.”
AFL emergencies Mitch Knevitt and Oli Wiltshire both played in the VFL, leaving young ruck Mitch Edwards as the carryover for tonight’s clash with Collingwood at the MCG.
