Emerging Geelong forward Shannon Neale hasn’t been ruled out of taking on Essendon on Saturday after scans on an ankle injury came back positive.

The 22-year-old was subbed out of the weekend win over Gold Coast during the second quarter.

“Shannon’s ankle has improved significantly since Saturday, and scans on Monday cleared him of serious injury. He will be a test to play this weekend,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.

Bailey Smith, who was a late withdrawal from the clash with the Suns, and Jack Bowes are also listed as tests.

“Bailey was experiencing low-level hamstring tightness pre-match, and the club decided to take a cautious approach, and he didn’t take his place in the team,” Mackie said.

“We will assess his availability for the game against Essendon later this week.”

Luckless veteran Cam Guthrie is facing another stint on the sidelines after suffering a calf complaint in Sunday’s VFL win over Gold Coast.

In his third match back from an Achilles issue, the two-time Carji Greeves medallist didn’t see out the first term.

“Cam experienced calf symptoms during the early stages of the VFL game on Sunday, and after quarter time didn’t take any further part in the match,” Mackie said.

“He has responded well to treatment so far, and our medical and high-performance team will assess and monitor him this week before deciding on a return to play timeline.

Injury-prone big man Toby Conway, who spoke to K rock Football before the win over Gold Coast, now has a timeline on his return to action.

“Toby continues to progress his loads and is now integrated into football drills,” Mackie said.

“We expect to see him run out with our VFL team in the Round 17 match against Collingwood.”
