Geelong police are targeting drivers failing to keep left on major roads.
Officers have received several complaints from local drivers about other motorists staying in the right-hand lane and not moving to the left lane.
Under Victorian road rules, drivers on a multi-lane road with a speed limit of 80km/h or more, must stay in the left lane unless they are overtaking or turning right.
Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said an Ocean Grove woman was fined last week, after being caught in the right lane between Moolap and Leopold.
“She failed to keep left, didn’t overtake anyone – she’s been issued with a $198 infringement notice and two demerit points,” he said.
Sr Sgt Riches said many drivers were worried about other motorists failing to do the right thing.
“It’s incumbent on road users to keep left, because what it does, it creates undue merging and road angst, which triggers some people.”
Police warn they will continue to target the offence in the lead up to the school holidays and warmer weather.
