There is a renewed push for a new basektball and netball centre in Geelong.

Mayor Trent Sullivan said the city was continuing to advocate for state funding for a regional indoor sports and events centre, that could hold up to 5,000 people.

He welcomed additional funding for an aquatic centre being built in Torquay, saying it was a sensible use of taxpayers’ money.

“The City is committed to common sense planning decisions for the region and building a new swimming facility at Armstrong Creek when the big Torquay facility was already approved did not pass that common sense test,” Cr Sullivan said.

“What does make complete sense is building the regional basketball and netball stadium to help the region cater for the ongoing growth of both sports.”

More than 10,000 people are registered to play netball in Geelong, with another 8,500 playing basketball.

The city expected those numbers to grow rapidly.
