Locals are being warned to ensure their cars are locked and valuables taken out as the weather warms up.

Police have noticed an increase in thefts in areas including Geelong’s CBD, around the hospital and Kardinia Park, where city workers are parking their vehicles.

Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said many of the crimes are opportunistic.

“Some of themes we’ve identified are unlocked cars, keys to cars being left in vehicles, glove boxes and consoles, which makes no sense to me,” he said.

“Valuables that are in plain sight.”

Sr Sgt Riches urged people to report any thefts.

“I know some of these cars people use for work are low value, they’re not insured.

“But when you come to your car and it’s been broken into and valuables and your phone, your keys to your house are missing, this causes a great amount of stress and angst.”

He said reporting the crimes could also help police data, and where resources need to be sent.
