Leisurelink’s aquatic facilities will be closed today as the pools undergo a deep clean.

The City of Greater Geelong says it has had confirmation of three people with confirmed cases of Cryptosporidium being at the Waurn Ponds facility over the last three weeks.

The parasite can make people sick, and is tolerant to chlorine.

The pools have undergone a ‘hyperchlorination’ process, increasing the chlorine in the water.

Alistair Miller from the city said the health and safety of the community was a top priority.

“We emphasise that this is a precautionary health and safety measure,” he said.

“We are following Department of Health directions to ensure the absolute safety of pool users once the facilities re-open on Friday.

“This is an unusual occurrence but it is something that happens in the aquatic industry from time to time, and our team is trained and equipped to take the necessary steps.”
