TAFE teachers across the state are walking off the job for 24-hours, stepping up the fight for better pay and conditions.
The Education Union says the Victorian government has failed to offer a decent deal, despite negotiations starting more than two years ago.
Union members will meet in Melbourne for a campaign update, before rallying on the steps of state parliament.
Matt Henry is a teacher at Geelong’s Gordon TAFE and said the issue was reaching breaking point.
“TAFE teachers in Victoria, we’re currently paid close to $8,000 less than the equivalent experienced school teachers who are teaching in our school systems,” he said.
“That’s not acceptable and it’s certainly not sustainable.
Mr Henry warned the inaction from the Allan government was driving teachers out of the sector.
“Without TAFE teachers we’ve got no tradies to build our homes, we’ve got no personal carer disability workers.
“We’ve got no early childhood educators, so it’s really important that we get our message across to the state government now.”
