Werribee River rescue

Emergency services working to rescue the woman and her dog [Victoria Police]

A woman and her dog have been rescued from the Werribee River.

Police were called to reports the woman tried to rescue her pooch, Minka, from the fast running river on Tuesday afternoon after it was swept away.

A passerby raised the alarm when they saw the the woman holding onto a tree in the waters.

It is understood the woman lost her footing near Redgum Drive and was swept around 20m downstream.

Water Police worked with the Search and Rescue squad, local officers and SES to rescue the 29-year-old and Minka.

Both were checked over when they got to dry land but were not seriously injured.

Police have thanked the public for raising the alarm.
