Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield will have the chance to become just the seventh player in VFL/AFL history to play 400 matches after signing a contract for 2027.
The Cats skipper, who will turn 37 early in the new season, has played 374 games across the Cats and Adelaide, and currently sits outright 12th on the all-time list.
Dangerfield will climb to equal 11th with Carlton legend Craig Bradley when Geelong faces Melbourne at the MCG tonight.
Drafted by the Crows with pick 10 in the 2007 National Draft from the Geelong Falcons, the Anglesea product played 154 matches with the South Australian club before joining the Cats ahead of the 2016 season.
At Geelong, Dangerfield has so far made 220 appearances and kicked 220 goals, and was vice-captain when the club claimed the 2022 premiership.
He won the Brownlow Medal and the Leigh Matthews Trophy as AFL Players’ Association MVP in his first season with the club.
Dangerfield is a three-time winner of the Carji Greeves Medal as Cats’ best-and-fairest.
An eight-time All-Australian, he has captained Geelong since 2023.
“It’s exciting for us all to have Pat playing for the Cats in 2027. He continues to lead from the front and remains an important player and person within our football program,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.
“Pat drives high standards, cares deeply about the club and has a positive influence on everyone around him, so we’re pleased to see him continue his career into 2027.”
Dangerfield’s re-signing leaves 12 Geelong players without a publicly confirmed contract for next year.
