Geelong has put its hand up to host an AFLW Gather Round if the concept is adopted in the women’s season.
CEO Steve Hocking has revealed the plan to have the competition’s 18 clubs in the state’s southwest at tonight’s Annual General Meeting.
It followed a question from the floor regarding Geelong being a future location for a men’s Gather Round.
“As a club, what we have done is we’ve actually put forward a concept for AFLW to have Gather Round here in the region,” Hocking said.
“We think we’ve got the facilities available to do that, and we actually think that that would land really well in the region.
“So we are working behind the scenes to hopefully, at some stage, bring that to life, but it requires investment.
“But if you have a look at the ovals here, have a look at Deakin University and so forth; (there are) some amazing ovals in this region.
“And, potentially, we’ll be wrapping Ballarat as part of that as well.
“So, that’s where our mind is at.”
2025 will see the third iteration of the AFL Gather Round, which will see a match played in the Barossa Valley for the first time.
There will be more coverage of Geelong’s AGM, including changes to the club‘s constitution, on Thursday.
