An agreement has been finalised between Geelong and Tyson Stengle’s management that has brought an end to the small forward’s days as a Geelong player.
The 27-year-old, who last played at AFL level in last year’s grand final, has barely been sighted at Kardinia Park in 2026 as he tackled off-field challenges.
Stengle played one VFL match this year, kicking four goals against Gold Coast in early June.
However, when he failed to make the trip to Queensland for a match against Southport the following week, his future at Geelong came further under the microscope.
Stengle departs the club with three years remaining on a five-year contract signed in 2024.
“Thank you so much to the Geelong Footy Club, in particular, to my teammates, the coaching staff, the support staff and most importantly to the fans,” he said in a statement.
“Your unwavering and loyal support through the great times and the tough times has meant more to me than you will ever know. I am deeply grateful, and look forward to supporting the club as a fan.”
After two matches with Richmond and 14 with Adelaide before the Crows sacked him in 2021 for an off-field indiscretion, Geelong threw Stengle a lifeline ahead of the 2022 season.
And he repaid the faith in spades.
Stengle played 25 games and kicked 53 goals to earn All-Australian selection as the Cats claimed the 2022 premiership.
In all, he played 93 matches in the Hoops, kicking 160 goals.
“We would like to congratulate Tyson on what he has achieved over his career, including his time at Geelong,” football boss Andrew Mackie said.
“To play over 100 games, earn All Australian selection and be part of a Premiership team are achievements we are proud to have shared with him.
“Tyson has shown tremendous resilience during his time at Geelong, and we believe now is the right time for both Tyson and the club to move forward.
“We thank Tyson for his contribution to the Cats and celebrate what he has achieved in his football career.”
