Geelong defender Jake Kolodjashnij has played his last AFL game after being medically retired.
The 31-year-old played 209 games for the Cats, including the 2022 Grand Final win over Sydney, after being drafted with pick 41 in 2013.
Kolodjashnij made 11 appearances at AFL level this year after fighting back from a range of injury concerns that wiped out his 2025 season.
His 200th match in the Hoops was memorable, as he kicked just his fifth goal of his career.
“I am so grateful for the many fond relationships and memories the Geelong Football Club has provided me,” Kolodjashnij said.
“Football has been such a significant part of my life. I feel lucky to have shared it with some of my closest friends, and to have had the on-field success that we had during my time at the club.”
Geelong found itself in the spotlight last month after it was revealed the Cats had asked Kolodjashnij to sign a document outside his standard playing contract.
That voluntary assumption-of-risk waiver cost the club $140,000, including a $40,000 suspended fine.
Highly regarded by his teammates, Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie said Kolodjashnij’s contribution to the club “extends far beyond his impact on the field”.
“He earned enormous respect through the way he approached his football, the care he showed for his teammates and his unwavering team-first attitude.
“Jake built a reputation as one of the competition’s most reliable defenders; his coaches and teammates had complete confidence he would take on whatever role was required and get the job done.
“His career has been defined by consistency, resilience and selflessness. The determination and professionalism he displayed throughout his journey are qualities that made him such a valued teammate and person within our football club.”
Kolodjashnij’s retirement leaves three Cats without a deal for next year: Jack Bowes, Mitch Knevitt and Jacob Molier.
