MAX Holmes says a focus on a “team-first” ethos has been key to Geelong’s impressive run through the middle of the AFL season.

The Cats have gone from just keeping their heads above water at 5-4 following the loss to St Kilda to sitting on top of the ladder off the back of an eight-game losing streak.

Much of that success can be apportioned to the Geelong midfield, which has been relentless in its attack on the ball and its opponents.

“We’ve had really great pressure, (and) it’s built on the back of everyone trying to do the team thing,” Holmes said.

“Everyone’s happy to lay a tackle, put on some pressure, and really put oppositions under pressure.

“As a collective, we’re going really well. You can’t narrow it down to one individual.

“It’s been really good, and hopefully, we can keep it flowing.”

After 12 games, including three as the unused medi-sub, in 2021, Holmes already has 11 matches to his credit this year despite missing seven games with a syndesmosis injury.

The Cats’ first pick in the 2020 National Draft, the 19-year-old has been a solid performer in his four outings since returning.

It includes 15 disposals and seven marks against reigning premier Melbourne and 17 disposals and two goals in the win over Carlton.

“This year … I’m getting a better understanding of my role in the team,” Holmes said.

“Everyone’s happy to play a certain role for the team, even if it’s not the best option for them.

“Rolling back; rolling into the hole has been a good one for me.

“Compared to last year, I definitely feel more confident with that kind of stuff.”

Holmes was among five players to commit their futures to Geelong earlier this week, signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of 2024.

“On the field, we’re winning games, which is enjoyable,” he said. “Off the field, it’s a great lifestyle down here in Geelong,” he said.

“(It’s) chilled out; it’s a more relaxed version of Melbourne, I reckon.

“We’ve got a good bunch of boys here, especially a lot of our young boys coming through.

“It’s really enjoyable, and I don’t plan on leaving.”
