At Selection – AFLW Round 3

February 20, 2020 6:00 pm in by

GEELONG will make at least two changes for Sunday’s crucial AFLW clash with reigning premier Adelaide.

As well as welcoming back All-Australian defender Meg McDonald, the Cats have named Maddie Boyd in the starting 16.

Geelong has also added former vice-captain Bec Goring to an extended bench that will be finalised on Friday afternoon.

Young defender Denby Taylor (ankle) is the only confirmed out.

Geelong’s meeting with the Crows will be the third between the two clubs in what is just the 11th AFLW appearance by the Cats.

In the most recent clash, Adelaide handed Geelong a 66-point hiding in last year’s preliminary final.

“They’re the benchmark, and we’ll benchmark ourselves against them this weekend,” coach Paul Hood said.

“As I’ve said a lot, we’re working on getting better every single time we play.

“So, yeah, it’s Adelaide. But what we’re really focussing on is us bringing the best version of our football we can, for as much of the game as we can.”

Hood knows after watching competition newcomers St Kilda lead the Crows for much of the afternoon before falling by 13 points that pressure will be critical to the Cats being competitive.

“It’s no secret that in any level of football if you can really pressure the opposition, you make it difficult for them to move the ball that they want,” he said.

“Credit to Adelaide, they overcame that by the end of the game. But St Kilda’s pressure, I think, was pretty impressive, and they showed a great template for all developing teams as to how to play.”
