Tyson Stengle’s road back to the AFL has hit a small bump, with illness ruling the forward out of Geelong’s VFL clash with Southport tomorrow.

Stengle’s first appearance at any level in 2026, against Gold Coast last week, yielded four goals from 15 disposals.

The one-time All-Australian was reported to be in the AFL’s medical model, which, coupled with his absence from the club, prevented him from playing.

The Cats, who sit atop the VFL ladder with a 10-1 record, ten points clear of second-place Werribee, have made three changes for the meeting with the Sharks.

Veteran defender Jed Bews, who was a travelling emergency with the AFL team, won’t play, while Darcy Edmends has been omitted.

After being managed out of the AFL team last week, Gryan Miers will make his second VFL appearance.

Rookie Keighton Matofai-Forbes has also been named for his first match of the season, while captain Dan Capiron returns after missing the big win over the Suns.
