Cat takes mental health break

GEELONG AFLW draftee Gemma Wright has stepped away from the club for mental health reasons.

The Cats have confirmed Wright, who was selected with pick No.34 in last year’s draft, won’t play in the 2020 season.

The 25-year-old, who wasn’t at last week’s Season Launch, won Carlton’s VFLW best-and-fairest in 2019.

Geelong will also be without talented young forward Mia Skinner, with a stress reaction in her femur to keep her sidelined.

The Cats hope the NAB League Girls leading goalkicker will be right to go for the VFLW season.

With Wright and Skinner to miss the season, Elise Coventry has been named Geelong’s upgraded train-on player.

Coventry is closing in on a return to football after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament in an AFLW practice match in January last year.

However, she will only be considered for selection if the Cats don’t have 23 players (including two emergencies) available for a match.
