Geelong draftee Shaun Mannagh has adopted a simple mantra after earning his AFL opportunity at age 26: make every post a winner.
The Norm Goss medalist was best-on-ground in last year’s VFL grand final for Werribee, proving to AFL recruiters the small forward was worthy of a shot at the big time.
Speaking after the Cats’ 12-point Community Series win over Essendon, Mannagh is the first to admit his advanced years don’t afford him the same time to prove himself as those drafted in their late teens.
“I’ve tried to come in and make every post a winner,” he told K rock Football.
“Those 18-year-olds, they’re very mature kids now, so I’ve got to up my game a little bit as well.
“I’ve learnt heaps off them, and especially the older guys as well.
“Geelong’s a fantastic club, and a lot of mature age recruits have come here and succeeded, so I’m hoping to do the same thing.
“Obviously, there’s a bit of urgency to get going early.”
