AS Geelong captain Joel Selwood weighs up his future, Tom Hawkins says extending his career into 2023 is “a mere formality”.
Hawkins, who kicked three goals in the grand final win over Sydney to take his season tally to 67, indicated in July he was keen to play on no matter how the rest of this season played out.
“I did say we were going to put it off,” he told K rock during the Cats’ premiership parade.
“I think Andrew’s (Mackie, list manager) going to be a bit busy in the next few days, so it’ll hopefully be some time after that.
“We’ve been chatting – it’s a mere formality.
“But, I do have to get it done because as of the end of September, I think I’d effectively be jobless.”
CATS: “TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES”
Since missing the 2019 preliminary final loss to Richmond, Hawkins has proven his durability by playing 71 consecutive games.
He has now won 11 leading goalkicker awards at Geelong, equalling Doug Wade’s record.
However, Hawkins has won his consecutively, topping the tally every year since 2012.
He has kicked 732 career goals to sit 19th in VFL/AFL history, and a season similar to 2022 next year could see Hawkins become just the 13th player to 800 goals.
